Right wing assholes

Act 1 Scene 2 page 33

Luke:...Stalin. Pol Pot. Idi Amin.
Mark: Joseph McCarthy. Milosevich. Timothy McVeigh.
Jude: Paris Hilton.

Joseph Stalin:
Soviet politician and dictator. n 1928 he inaugurated the Five-Year Plans that radically altered Soviet economic and social structures and resulted in the deaths of many millions. In the 1930s he contrived to eliminate threats to his power through the purge trials and through widespread secret executions and persecution. In World War II he signed the German-Soviet Nonaggression Pact (1939), attacked Finland ( Russo-Finnish War), and annexed parts of eastern Europe to strengthen his western frontiers. When Germany invaded Russia (1941), Stalin took control of military operations. He continued his repressive political measures to control internal dissent; increasingly paranoid, he was preparing to mount another purge after the so-called Doctors' Plot when he died. Noted for bringing the Soviet Union into world prominence, at terrible cost to his own people, he left a legacy of repression and fear as well as industrial and military power.

Pol Pot:
Pol Pot declares 'Year Zero' and directs a ruthless program to "purify" Cambodian society of capitalism, Western culture, religion and all foreign influences in favour of an isolated and totally self-sufficient Maoist agrarian state. No opposition is tolerated.

Foreigners are expelled, embassies closed, and the currency abolished. Markets, schools, newspapers, religious practices and private property are outlawed.

Towns and cities are emptied and their former inhabitants are deemed "April 17th people" or "new people." The country's entire population is forced to relocate to agricultural collectives, the so-called "killing fields." Inmates exist in primitive conditions. Families are separated. Buddhist monks are defrocked and forced into labour brigades. Former city residents are subjected to unending political indoctrination. Children are encouraged to spy on adults.

An estimated 1.5 million are worked or starved to death, die of disease or exposure, or are summarily executed for infringements of camp discipline. Infringements punishable by death include not working hard enough, complaining about living conditions, collecting or stealing food for personal consumption, wearing jewellery, engaging in sexual relations, grieving over the loss of relatives or friends and expressing religious sentiments.

1997 - In June Pol Pot becomes convinced that Son Sen, the Khmer Rouge minister for defence and his friend for 40 years, is collaborating with the Cambodian Government and orders his execution. Sen's wife and children are also killed. He is imprisoned and dies in 1998.

Idi Amin:

Idi Amin Dada, who became known as the 'Butcher of Uganda' for his brutal, despotic rule whilst president of Uganda in the 1970s, is possibly the most notorious of all Africa's post-independence dictators. Amin seized power in a military coup in 1971 and ruled over Uganda for 8 years. Estimates for the number of his opponents who were either killed, tortured, or imprisoned vary from 100,000 to half a million. He was ousted in 1979 by Ugandan nationalists, after which he fled into exile.

Amin's killer squads, under the official titles of 'State Research Bureau' and 'Public Safety Unit' were responsible for tens of thousands of abductions, tortures and murders. Amin personally ordered the execution of the Anglican Archbishop of Uganda, Janani Luwum, the chief justice, the chancellor of Makerere College, governor of the Bank of Uganda, and several of his own parliamentary ministers. Dies in exile in 2003.

Joseph McCarthy:

On 9th February, 1950, Joseph McCarthy, a senator from Wisconsin, made a speech claiming to have a list of 205 people in the State Department that were known to be members of the American Communist Party (late he reduced this figure to 57). The list of names was not a secret and had been in fact published by the Secretary of State in 1946. These people had been identified during a preliminary screening of 3,000 federal employees. Some had been communists but others had been fascists, alcoholics and sexual deviants. If screened, McCarthy's own drink problems and sexual preferences would have resulted in him being put on the list.

For the next two years McCarthy's committee investigated various government departments and questioned a large number of people about their political past. Some lost their jobs after they admitted they had been members of the Communist Party. McCarthy made it clear to the witnesses that the only way of showing that they had abandoned their left-wing views was by naming other members of the party. This witch-hunt and anti-communist hysteria became known as McCarthyism.

Milosevich:

Slobodan Milosevic was born August 29, 1941 in Pozarevac, Yugoslavia (Serbia). A child of the Second World War...

He met his future wife, Mirjana Markovic, when they were in high-school and they were married while both were attending the University of Belgrade and Milosevic was beginning his climb through the ranks of the Communist Party.

Laying the blame for what occurred in Bosnia on the shoulders of one man, even a cynical opportunist like Milosevic, is patently absurd. By encouraging the arming of Bosnian Serb militants and providing them with logistical support he should certainly be brought to justice but other factors, including the inaction of Europe and an absurd UN arms embargo that only penalised the mostly Muslim government of the fledgling state, thus allowing the heavily armed Croats and Serbs to move ahead with their ethnic cleansing, were also factors. It should also be mentioned that both Milosevic and Tudjman seemed to have the enthusiastic support of most of their countrymen.

When faced with real opposition Milosevic has always folded, as he did in October of 2000 when he was finally driven from power after yet another poorly orchestrated electoral fraud. One of the most horrible things that Serbians faced in the wake of his retreat was how little he had been opposed in Serbia over the years.6 In 1996 large numbers of protesters took to the streets to protest an earlier foray into electoral fraud, this time in non-presidential elections, and he was forced into a compromise, turning over, among others, the position of Mayor of Belgrade to the Opposition. Many members of the “United Opposition” who turned against him after the country was bombed by Nato and economic sanctions left the country in a shambles, were some of his most important allies on the Right and their rhetoric was even more extreme than his own.

The ineptness of Milosevic’s handling of the Kosovo situation in the late 1990’s showed that he was anything but the “mad genius” he was portrayed as in the West. It was in many ways the lack of will shown by Europe and the United States during the Bosnia crisis that allowed this man of rather average intelligence to manipulate the peace process. When faced with daily bombings and dwindling popularity over Kosovo, Milosevic once again tried to wrap himself in the role of peace-maker but this time not even the once credulous Clinton Administration was buying it.

The tragedies that followed in Milosevic’s wake are not his sole responsibility. The simple truth is that Slobodan Milosevic probably never committed a murder with his own hands: there were plenty of people around who were willing to do his killing for him. Let’s hope that his successors honour all the victims of his Presidency and not just those who share their national identity or there will be more Bosnias, more crises and more hatred in the very heart of Europe in the years to come.

Timothy McVeigh,

Oklahoma City Bomber

convicted and executed for the worst act
of domestic terrorism in United States history,
became a radicalized member of the far right-wing
in the early 1990s. With fellow army veteran Terry
Nichols, McVeigh conspired to destroy the Alfred P.
Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City as a blow
to a federal government that they saw as an evil
force.
Their blow against the government they despised killed
168 people, eight of whom were federal agents, 19
were children, mostly at a daycare facility in the
building, and the rest were ordinary office workers
and citizens attending to normal business.

In a letter he wrote to Fox News correspondent Rita
Cosby, McVeigh attempted to justify his attack on a
federal building as no different from a U.S.
military air or missile strike on a government
building in an enemy nation such as Serbia or Iraq.
This is the statement of a person who is so
alienated from his own country that he no longer
recognizes his victims as anything other than an
enemy target.
