ACT ! Definitions

Page 1- Propaganda- information, ideas, or rumors deliberately spread widely to help or harm a person, group, movement, institution, nation, etc.
Page 2- Global Warming- An increase in the average temperature of the Earth's
atmosphere, especially a sustained increase great enough to
cause changes in the global climate. The Earth has experienced
numerous episodes of global warming through its history, and currently
appears to be undergoing such warming. The present warming is
generally attributed to an increase in the greenhouse effect , brought
about by increased levels of greenhouse gases, largely due to the effects
of human industry and agriculture. Expected long-term effects of
current global warming are rising sea levels, flooding, melting of polar ice caps and glaciers, fluctuations in temperature and
precipitation, more frequent and stronger El Ninos and La Ninas,
drought, heat waves, and forest fires.
Page 2- Conservation- prevention of injury, decay, waste, or loss…official supervision
of rivers, forests, and other natural resources in order to preserve and
protect them through prudent management.
Page 6- Alternator- An electric generator that produces alternating current. The generator's coil
is rotated (by a turbine, motor, or other power source), and its circular path
causes it to cut cross a magnetic field ( set up by strong magnets), first in
one direction, then the other, with each cycle. The electric potential induced
in the coil by this motion thus alternates between positive and negative once
with each cycle, resulting in alternating current.
Page 7- Abstract-thought of apart from concrete realities, specific objects, or actual
instances: an abstract idea…of or pertaining to the formal aspect of art,
emphasizing lines, colors, generalized or geometrical forms, etc., esp. with
reference to their relationship to one another.
Page 9- Vegan- A vegetarian who eats plant products only, especially one who uses no
products derived from animals, as fur or leather.
Page 10- Adkin’s Diet- is a departure from the previously prevailing metabolic theories.
Atkins said that there are important unrecognized factors in Western
eating habits leading to obesity. Primarily, he believed that the main
cause of obesity is eating refined carbohydrates, particularly sugar, flour,
and high-fructose corn syrups.
Page 12- Patriotism- devoted love, support, and defense of one's country; national loyalty.
Page 12- Nationalism- The strong belief that the interests of a particular nation-state are of primary importance. Also, the belief that a people who share a common language, history, and culture should constitute an independent
nation, free of foreign domination.
Page 16- Dyke- a lesbian; a bulldiker.(Rude and derogatory.) : Who's the dike in the
cowboy boots?
Page 17- Insurgents- a person who rises in forcible opposition to lawful authority, esp. a
person who engages in armed resistance to a government or to the
execution of its laws; rebel…a member of a section of a political party that
revolts against the methods or policies of the party.
Page 17- Terrorists- (this is a definition that I found that made me laugh) A terrorist is
someone who will not beat the USA! It is someone with religious beliefs and
a lot of explosives. They're willing to kill in the name of their God. They
attack other countries. (now for the real one) a radical who employs terror
as a political weapon; usually organizes with other terrorists in small cells;
often uses religion as a cover for terrorist activities
Page 17- Al Queda- An international organization of loosely affiliated cells that carry out
attacks and bombings in the attempt to disrupt the economies and influence
of Western nations and advance Islamic fundamentalism.
Page 18- Communism- a system of social organization in which all economic and social
activity is controlled by a totalitarian state dominated by a single and
self-perpetuating political party.
Page 18- Nazi- a member of the National Socialist German Workers' party of Germany,
which in 1933, under Adolf Hitler, seized political control of the country,
suppressing all opposition and establishing a dictatorship over all cultural,
economic, and political activities of the people, and promulgated belief in the
supremacy of Hitler as Fuhrer, aggressive anti-Semitism, the natural supremacy
of the German people, and the establishment of Germany by superior force as a
dominant world power. The party was officially abolished in 1945 at the conclusion
of World War II.
Page 18- Protest- an expression or declaration of objection, disapproval, or dissent, often in opposition to something a person is powerless to prevent or avoid: a
protest against increased taxation.
Page 18- Liberals- favorable to or in accord with concepts of maximum individual
freedom possible, esp. as guaranteed by law and secured by governmental \
protection of civil liberties…free from prejudice or bigotry; tolerant: a liberal
attitude toward foreigners…open-minded or tolerant, esp. free of or not
bound by traditional or conventional ideas, values, etc.
Page 18- Conservatives- disposed to preserve existing conditions, institutions, etc., or to restore traditional ones, and to limit change…Favoring traditional views
and values; tending to oppose change.
Page 20- Boycott- to combine in abstaining from, or preventing dealings with, as a means of
intimidation or coercion…to abstain from buying or using.
Page 23- Redneck- an uneducated white farm laborer, esp. from the South…a bigot or reactionary, esp. from the rural working class.
Page 29- Fascist- "A form of political behavior marked by obsessive preoccupation with community decline, humiliation or victimhood and by compensatory cults of
unity, energy and purity, in which a mass-based party of committed
nationalist militants, working in uneasy but effective collaboration with
traditional elites, abandons democratic liberties and pursues with redemptive
violence and without ethical or legal restraints goals of internal cleansing and

Page 30- Vegetarian- a person who does not eat or does not believe in eating meat, fish,
fowl, or, in some cases, any food derived from animals, as eggs or cheese,
but subsists on vegetables, fruits, nuts, grain, etc
Page 34- Liberation- The act or process of trying to achieve equal rights and status…the
act or fact of gaining equal rights or full social or economic opportunities for
a particular group.
Page 35- Ethical- pertaining to or dealing with morals or the principles of morality;
pertaining to right and wrong in conduct.
